This is a school that operates on the fact that you learn best by doing, cooperating, and having fun.
Students learn at their own pace, and style. Respect for everyone is a guiding principle. Second Foundation is a democratic school, where rules and disagreements, and their resolutions are discussed and decided by all at weekly school meetings. Students, volunteers, and teachers work together teaching and learning with each other. Friends help each other read, do math playing Magic cards, play games in Spanish, and talk about classical myths and legends. The flexible schedule of the school allows for participation in the multitude of learning opportunities this city offers from art to zoology.
Students who go to Second Foundation School feel they have taken responsibility for their own education, that they know how to learn, and that they will continue to pursue learning throughout their careers. Every year the school produces a play. Almost everyone participates in many ways – acting, creating scenery, publicity, audio/visual, etc. Some years talented older students write the script with amazing results. Every day is unique – one day my daughter will learn engineering and math with Lego, the next enduring lessons about friendship!
